When I was a little kid, every number had a unique personality. “One” through “Twelve” were like a happy cast of imaginary friends who inhabited the world around me. It turns out this way of seeing the world is called ordinal synesthesia. It’s observable in 1% of the adult population. The vibrant, never-changing personalities of these numbers kept me entertained on road trips and gave me a forum to exercise my imagination and perform social thought experiments. Unfortunately, this numerical personification did not lead to a savant-like affinity for advanced mathematics. But I believe it did foreshadow a different gift: empathy.
